Buffets By Design Afternoon Tea Week

Afternoon Tea – what’s hot!

To coincide with National Afternoon Tea Week (12-18 August 2019), we thought we’d place a spotlight on this British institution and look at some of the latest trends.

Themed, but not as you know it

A themed afternoon tea is still as popular as ever, but it’s not just about the look and taste, what about your other senses? That’s where an experience like the Science Afternoon Tea at The Ampersand Hotel ticks all the boxes. Their website says “physics, chemistry and gastronomy meet in curious alchemy,” which sees food served in perti dishes to really get the sense of intrigue at work. But they don’t just stop there, they’ve made sure they have a separate experience to cater for dietary requests for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free.

Twist on the classic

For this celebratory week, what about taking the traditional tea out into the open at a contemporary rooftop bar? Savage Garden, Pepys Street, includes a twist on the classic cream cheese and salmon with its beetroot cured salmon served alongside sweet potato sliders and tacos.

Or how about the Art Afternoon Tea at Rosewood London, quite simply think of a painting of delicacies on your plate – plus it was awarded the accolade of Best Contemporary Afternoon Tea at last year’s afternoon tea awards!

Don’t forget the ‘Tea’

But it’s not just about the sandwiches, scones and cakes, what about the tea? It’s the star of the show afterall! There’s a real difference in trends for teas we’re seeing in the last year as consumers seek out teas with wellness qualities. According to the Mintel Global New Products Database report, the analysts have selected products that sum up the trends to watch out for which include:

  • Bold flavours;
  • Inclusion of vegetables in tea infusions including the likes of tomato, rosehip, basil and onion;
  • ‘Power tea’ – think green tea, lemon or turmeric but with added nutrients.
