Chinese New Year food traditions and trends

Chinese New Year is almost upon us. This year, following the movement of the moon, Chinese New Year falls on the 5th February and the Chinese public holiday is spread out over five days!

The new year follows are twelve-year cycle, where each year is defined by one of twelve zodiac animals. For 2019, the zodiac animal is the Pig. In Chinese culture, the Pig is not thought to be smart but loves to sleep and eat a lot! So, since it’s the year of the Pig with its love of food, it seems fitting to dedicate a Buffets by Design blog to the celebration of Chinese New Year.

The Celebrations

In Chinese homes and streets, they are decorated with lit red lanterns. The colour red is chosen because it symbolises happiness, wealth and prosperity. Children often receive red envelopes full of money from relatives.

A huge part of the celebration is a reunion dinner; a huge feast to bring together families and a chance to reflect over the past year. Food plays an important role in the feast, not only is it delicious and there are lots of treats, but certain foods have symbolic meanings.

The Food

The most famous New Year festival food is dumplings. Dumplings signify wealth, sometimes lucky coins can be hidden in a couple dumplings and the one to find the coin will receive the best luck and wealth in the upcoming year.

Noodles are a stable in Chinese cuisine. You can pair noodles with a variety of sides and incorporate a range of ingredients, all with different meanings. To fit to the theme of the ‘Year of the Pig’, a roasted pig is said to bring peace. Other noodle dishes can include lobster, shrimp, or for the vegetarians out there: tofu, which represents happiness and fortune for the entire family.

Nian Gao translates to ‘New Year’s Cake’ in English. A Nian Gao is also known as a ‘rice cake’. The Nian Gao has a long history and was originally used to worship the gods and the ancestors. It represents a rise in career.
